RDBMS Performance

We all know the benefits of replacing SQL literals with bind variables, but how do you speed things up if you've already got a bunch of them in the code? Pythian makes a suggestion: regexp_replace: Auto-translate SQL literals to bind vars.

ITIL and the DBA

ITIL is one of the key elements of understanding how Oracle Support does its job, and a major element of any modern IT shop. Here's an article on it from the DBA's perspective at Jobacle (sounds like a labor-related icicle, eh?): What does a DBA really do – in ITIL terms ?

Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update for February 2013

The Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update for February 2013 was released on February 1st, 2013. The original Critical Patch Update for Java SE was scheduled on February 19th , but Oracle decided to accelerate the release of this Critical Patch Update because active exploitation “in the wild” of one of the vulnerabilities affecting the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in desktop browsers, was addressed with this Critical Patch Update. Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information. It includes a list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities, and links to other important documents.

Also, it is essential to review the Critical Patch Update supporting documentation referenced in the Advisory before applying patches, as this is where you can find important pertinent information.

The Critical Patch Update Advisories are available at the following location:
