Oracle Priority Service Infogram for 31-OCT-2012

WLS

Yuli Vasiliev shows you how take advantage of multiple Oracle WebLogic Server instances grouped into a cluster to maximize scalability and availability: Setting Up, Configuring, and Using an Oracle WebLogic Server Cluster.

OOW

OpenWorld is fading into the past, but the positive results that always come from all that knowledge exchange and networking are just starting to bloom. There are also some resources available for catching up on some of the items you may not have been able to catch at OOW, or, heaven forefend, didn’t attend this year (Kiran Dasari passed these along):

Oracle channel on YouTube for videos from Executive Keynotes

Oracle Content Catalogue for PDF presentations

Oracle’s Open World Content catalogue provides PDF’s from most, if not all of the Panels and similar sessions that took place:

The direct link to the Content Catalogue: https://oracleus.activeevents.com/connect/search.ww?event=openworld

To link to the Open World 2012 website:  http://www.oracle.com/openworld/index.html.

ADF

Mobile is the buzzword of the moment. But it's a lot more than that. It has everyone from the very young to the very old involved in computing because it has removed several hindrances. As one reviewer said of the recently released iPad mini, you feel like you are holding a very personal version of the internet in your hand.

To help you join the ongoing revolution Weblog on Oracle ADF Mobile has appeared, and has some links to resources: Resources to Help You Getting Up To Speed on ADF Mobile.

Java

Blue Sky Workshop shows us some good coding for creating Windows installers for your apps: JavaFX: Create Windows Native Installer and EXE with NetBeans 7.2.

Coding

Eddie Awad's Twitter feed pointed out this great article at Smashing magazine: PowerfulCommand Line Tools For Developers.

Hash Tables

Hugh E. Williams proves that he is in fact obsessed with hash tables: Five Myths about Hash Tables. Just when we thought the war on drugs was being won (well, in fantasy at least), along comes hash table obsession and turns our engineers into, well, obsessed engineers. And since engineers have computer-like brains that can be very dangerous. Get them into one of those 'compute this: I am lying' loops from Star Trek and they can blow up on you. By the way, judging from the comments, other engineers are in fact MORE obsessed with hash tables than Hugh. Very disturbing.

Solaris

At the Steve Sistare's Blog a posting on one of the spots where Solaris internals meet Oracle internals: High Resolution Timeouts.

Testing

UTest, the Software Testing Blog has a posting on 6 Things You Should Never Say to a Software Tester. And then there's the seventh question: Hey, what does this big red button do?

Book Review - SOA

RedStack is quite pleased with Oracle SOA Suite 11g Administrator’s Handbook, and wrote a glowing review.

...And Finally

Upgrade your Database - NOW! introduces us to the wonderful world of Gangnam Now an internet viral song by PSY, and it's British derivative Eton Now: Where's Gangnam?

Oracle Priority Service Infogram for 24-OCT-2012

Security

RDBMS

The enkitec company is offering a free webinar (as a lead-in to its paid ones), on Maximum Availability Architecture.

Somehow I only noticed this series at posting 3: Materialized view Concepts – Discussion Series 3.  Looks useful. It's over at IN ORACLE MILIEU…Beyond Knowledge.

Performance

As often happens with performance folks, this article is something you can bring up at the next party you attend. RDBMS performance is a romance magnet: Does the Parse Time Increase Linearly with the Number Of Child Cursors? Posted over at the Striving for Optimal Performance blog.

I seem to recall Jonathan Lewis discussing this subject before over at the Oracle Scratchpad blog: Skip Scan.

Training

Redgate is offering a webinar on Improving Development Processes for Database Teams by Dominic Delmolino & Cary Millsap on 31-OCT-2012.

Solaris

How to Migrate Oracle Database from Oracle Solaris 8 to Oracle Solaris 11. From Orgad Kimchi. And yes, that is his real name. And yes, he should be in films.

Patching

APEX

From Oracle Application Express - APEX (aka Dimitri Gielis): Moving your APEX app to the Oracle Cloud.

Simple. I like simple: Upgrading to APEX 4.2 in three steps

General Computing

At The Enterprise System Spectator, a confirmation of what I see when working at the local cafe. I'm no longer one of only one or two people on tablets. Most people there are on tablets: Tablet Computers to Begin Displacing Laptops.

...And Finally

Okay, so this article in Discover Magazine maintains that cooking is the technology that allowed us be so clever. So that tells me we must never teach gorillas to cook or risk a Planet of the Apes scenario. Don’t let gorillas near your outdoor grill, and if they are nearby and observing the process, toss them vegetables to distract them. Or run away.

A really cool list of life hacks. I’d only known or discovered one or two of them previously.

Oracle Priority Service Infogram for 17-OCT-2012

WLS

The WebLogic Partner Community EMEA blog presents: WebLogic Server 11gR1 Interactive Quick Reference. It slices, it dices, it's quick and it's interactive.

APEX

Find out the Differences between Oracle APEX 4.1.1 and 4.2 at the get along with oracle and apex blog (hopefully get along as in progress, move forward, I don't think many people actually don't get along with APEX, it's such a friendly beastie).

RDBMS

At the Oracle Instructor: Auditing ALTER SYSTEM commands. I like the concluding statement: don't believe it, test it. That sums up 80% of good IT practices.

Primavera

From the Oracle Primavera Analytics Blog: Security Controls on data for P6 Analytics.

SQL Developer

A quick but useful tip from the Notes on Oracle blog: SQL Developer tip: Don't open the table.

Mobile Computing

The Oracle Fusion Middleware blog introduces a very useful subject: Build Mobile App for E-Business Suite Using SOA Suite and ADF Mobile. Next we need to address the other key item in mobile computing: Enough with the Flash already!

And this item from last week at Debra's thoughts on Oracle: Fusion Apps Go Mobile.

…and Finally

Another good find from Eddie Awad: 10 Dropbox Tips for Beginners.

On Monday, October 1, 2012, at Oracle OpenWorld 2012, Oracle announced an exception that will be provided for the first 13 months of Sustaining Support on Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11.5.10 (11i10), valid from December 1, 2013 – December 31, 2014. Also announced during Oracle OpenWorld, the Extended Support period for E-Business Suite Release 12.1 has been extended through December, 2018. Uplift fees are waived for all years of Extended Support (June, 2014 – December, 2018) for customers with an active Oracle Premier Support for Software contract. Oracle Priority Service Infogram for 10-OCT-2012

EBS

The latest from the Oracle E-Business Suite Technology blog:

Eddie Awad linked to this posting by Alex Antonatos in his Twitter feed: More Tips on Upgrading from EBS R11 to R12.

Exadata

The guru of all that is indexed, Richard Foote, posted his second in a series on Exadata Storage Indexes Part II – Differences With Database Indexes (Space Dementia).

Exalytics

WLS

The WebLogic Server Blog brings us a series on Data Source Security: Part 1 and Part 2.

SPARC

Who put the snap in Superman's cape? SPARC, apparently: What Makes SPARC SuperCluster Super.

And from the Oracle EMEA Value-Added Distributor News: eSTEP Techcast "An Update on OVM Server for SPARC".

Cloud Control

MySQL

OOW

The first wave of the post-OpenWorld stories is upon us, as in this summation from Amis Technology Blog: OOW 2012 – The Big Stories.

Coding

Over at Gorban.org there's a rather inspirational Software Architecture cheat sheet. It has items like 'Testable', 'Orthogonal', etc. All very laudable. Very unlike my architecture cheatsheet from the time, years ago, that I was a developer. That one ran: "Do they pay me enough for this grief? Yes --> Code it. No --> Distract the client by pointing up and saying 'Look, an eclipse!' and run out of the room."

…And Finally

As we wrote earlier, there are teams of scientists working on a warp drive. Now there’s another group developing dilithium crystals.  The 3-d printers are a long way from being replicators, unless you want ‘Tea, Earl Grey, Plastic’, but we seem to be getting closer to Star Trek by the week.

And if you are going to start building Data the android you might want to look at David Deutsch’s views on artificial intelligence. He’s one of the great minds of our age, so it’s worth a read.

Is your organization spread all over the globe (though not the galaxy, yet)? Robin King found a very handy utility for finding meeting times for people in a variety of time zones.

Over at Lifehacker, something clever, verging on devious. I like that.  Make a Coughing Ringtone to Go Unnoticed When You Forget to Silence Your Phone.

Oracle Priority Service Infogram for 02-OCT-2012

EBS

From the Oracle E-Business Suite Technology blog: New Whitepaper: Primer on Integrating with EBS 12 with Other Applications.

RDBMS

I sure never heard of an overlaps predicate, but Eddie Awad chanced upon it and covers it in his blog: Cool Undocumented OVERLAPS Predicate

A couple of good items this week from dbaStreet. First an article on 12c new features.

Speaking of 12c, OOW is still going on as I write this, but the good ideas, new features and new articles are already starting to flow. Here from Jonathan Lewis is a heads up on 12c partitioning new features: 12c Partitioning.

Network

Eddie Awad has good things to say about the PocketSoap tracing tool.

PeopleSoft

The PeopleSoft DBA Blog offers some thoughts and experiments on Maintaining Optimizer Statistics on PeopleSoft on Oracle 11g. As the author says, please bear in mind that this is experimental.
This item at the PeopleSoft Wiki is certainly interesting. The author is offering a roll your own associative array: Associative Array.
When I read this article about virtualization and the box within a box within a box concept at the On the PeopleSoft Road blog, for some reason it reminded me of an old joke about Russian spies working undercover in the German army's HQ during the war. One of them is revealed, then it's revealed the one who revealed him is also a Russian, etc., etc. until finally someone says: Wait a minute, aren't there any Germans in the headquarters at all?

Hyperion

At in 2 Hyperion another great technical article for hands on types: Change Application Maintenance Mode via Command Line.

SOAP
Posting this: soapUI is back, with lot more for you, partly because it looks interesting for techies, but also because the blog title Web Services on Drugs intrigues me. Personally I don't use web services, but combining them with drugs is likely to dilute the whole psychedelic experience. Not a good idea.

New Book

Over at RedStack, an announcement about a new book that’s out: Oracle BPM Suite 11g: Advanced BPMN Topics.
